Introduction
When the pressure fluid with certain energy enters the rotation, the rotor rotates around the stator axis driven by the pressure mud to provide power for the drill bit. The Power Section is the heart of the drilling motor, which determines the dynamic performance.
The power section is the most important part of downhole motor. We define a power section by its outer tube diameter. rotor/stator lobe configuration and number of stages. SGDF can provide motors from 2 7/8 to 11 1/4. Normally, the motor can output more torque and power as the tube size increased. The rotor and stator are designed as helical elements with a major and minor diameter. The lobe is a curved spiral shape formed by the difference in the major and minor diameter.
The stator has one more lobe than the rotor. The difference in lobes creates a fluid inlet area (cavity) where fluid can be pumped through to create rotation . A stage is the distance measured parallel to the axis between two corresponding points of the same spiral lobe .This distance is commonly referred to as the lead of the stator. The torque and speed rate can be varied by change lobes and stages . Generally speaking , a motor with more lobes can generates more torque , a motor with less lobes can have a high-speed rate. On the other hand , the torque can be increased by add more stages. So ,there are two ways to increase the torque : first , increase the rotor/stator lobes ; second, increase motor stages.
